AROUND THE STATE

Mass Youth Soccer Thanks Al Cosentino

After almost 30 years of involvement with Mass Youth Soccer, many of them as a full time member of the staff, Al Cosentino retired late last year. One would be hard-pressed to find an aspect of Mass Youth Soccer in which Al has not been involved. He has been a member of the board of directors, State Cup Commissioner, MTOC Commissioner, a league official, the State Referee Administrator, a referee assignor and an employee.

He has represented Massachusetts at the US Youth Workshop, the US Youth National Championships, the US Youth Soccer Annual meeting, the US Soccer Annual meeting and all of the various Region I events. Al was also the head of the Massachusetts team which hosted the Region I Championships on four separate occasions.

Al's dedication, commitment, loyalty, hard work and enthusiasm have been a constant source of inspiration to all who know him. Al's love of the game is infectious; as Al is fond of saying, "I'm Italian, you know."

Al is a member of the Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association's Hall of Fame. The entire Mass Youth Soccer family wishes Al and Cathy fair winds and following seas.

District Select is looking for players and coaches!

Mass Youth Soccer sponsors a summer soccer program called the District Select Program. Cities and towns throughout the Commonwealth are combined into districts of roughly equal population. In most years, we operate with seven districts, although teams are not always formed in eligible age groups within each district.

The District Select Program was originally formed to identify a pool of players in each age group from which an ODP team would be selected. Today it is used primarily as a means to allow the continuation of the player's development during the summer.

On an annual basis, each District holds tryouts to determine the players to participate in their respective groupings. The Program utilizes single-year age groups for boys and girls, from Under-12 through Under-17, as well as Under-19. Each district is responsible for scheduling their tryouts independently. Tryouts are held during the first two-three weeks in May. _The season runs approximately four weeks, starting on the first weekend following July 4, and concluding with a tournament the first or second weekend of August. All teams are eligible to participate in the tournament.
